We are a student-run society based at Wits Medical School in Johannesburg. We expose students, mostly from first to fourth year, to the field of internal medicine. Our mission is to promote an interest and passion for internal medicine.
We are an integral part of medical school life as we host various events throughout the year that are interesting, fun and informative.
Additionally, through our extensive outreach portfolio, we strive to make a difference in our communities through various drives, initiatives and community visits.
We host numerous events throughout the year. These include our annual Curious Cases, Documentary Screening, Doctors on Doctors, GEMP event to name a few. Although most of our events focus on internal medicine, we have important topics such as mental health.
We strongly believe in learning together. We host skills workshops in collaboration with many doctors and physicians to help hone and advance the skills we are taught in class. Our workshops include basic skills, emergency skills, diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, as well as interpretation of imaging. We also run various simulations at the Wits Sim Lab.
We also strongly promote teaching skills to the more junior years at medical school, such as the first and second years. We host unique events specifically designed for our younger colleagues.
We are devoted to helping the community around us. We are deeply invested in outreach and in giving to others. We hold regular collections, participate in outreach clinics and engage with various school outreach initatives. We are always looking for new outreach opportunities.
Our main outreach project is our Care Kit Drive.
We have an incredible team of people that provide technological and communication support for all of our activities and events. This is a portfolio that has grown rapidly and we are proud to be able to use new and exciting technology when putting together our events.
We have an amazing team of people behind all of our posters and social media activities. We engage with our colleagues online and advertise our activities through these social media channels.
We are a non-profit society. Our activities are funded by sponsors. We have a wonderful team helping us manage the finances of the society with the hope of longevity for future doctors.
We believe in growing and advancing with time. We have a unique portfolio which aims to grow the society as well as the committee. We aim to better understand what sort of events and initiatives our colleagues at medical school would benefit from. Furthermore, this portfolio focusses on advocating for health and well-being.
